Everybody loves a tough hard-nosed guard from Detroit and that is exactly what Mark Mayberry Jr. of Detroit Loyola 2020 is. The All-Catholic League guard from last season has continued his great play into 2019-2020. Mayberry is the combo guard who can get to the rim and finish while also being able to nail the jumper too.
Detroit Loyola and Mayberry are off to a hot 7-0 start this season including wins over Notre Dame Prep and Warren Lincoln over the Christmas holiday. Mayberry was responsible for 13 points including the game-winner over Notre Dame Prep on December 20th. During the Motorcity Roundball Classic held at Ferndale High School, Mayberry gained MVP honors after scoring 23 points in a win over Warren Lincoln. In this contest, he was very aggressive in the half-court attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line. His high school coach, Dennis Morey had this to say about Mark “He worked hard in the offseason to improve all aspects of his shooting. He has really grown into being a leader and face of our program.”
Mark Mayberry Jr. spent the summer playing for REACH Legends NY2LA team and Head Coach Dedan Milton. Coach Milton spoke highly of Mayberry and said “He was our most consistent player the entire summer and played very well in both the guard positions. He is a kid that is going to get after it on both ends of the floor and will put pressure on your defense driving to the basket. His shooting has improved and will be a tough guard to check in the Catholic league this season.”
Mayberry is currently receiving interest from D3 and NAIA level schools here in Michigan. Both Kalamazoo College and Albion were on hand to see his 23-point outburst over the holiday. He is the kind of player with his work ethic and toughness that could end up playing NCAA Division 2 level or finding the right fit at a NCAA D3 school depending on style of play. Colleges looking for a kid who can play defense especially on the ball, go hard, attack the rim and make a jumper look no further than Mayberry! Look for him and the Detroit Loyola Bulldogs as front runners for the Varsity AA Catholic League title this season.
