The Muskegon Big Reds have started off the season with an 8-1 record and viewed as one of the top teams in the state. Jarvis Walker has been very instrumental in the Big Reds success and his play has also garnered some attention for the Mr. Basketball Award. His hard work over the summer has led to him committing to IPFW to play NCAA Division I basketball in the Fall. We were able to get some insight from Jarvis and discuss this season, his goals and his plans going forward.
Q: What were your goals going into the season?
A: The most important goal going into my senior is to win a state championship with my brothers!
Q: Why did you choose to commit to IPFW?
A: I chose IPFW because it felt like the right fit. They showed me love, constantly talking to me each and every day. They really made an effort to build a connection with me and my family, which means a lot to me. I was always told to go where you are wanted! Also, they play good basketball and a tough schedule. I’m excited to be part of their inaugural first season in the Horizon League. Also, I feel I could come and contribute right away.
Q: How has your game developed since last season?
A: I think my game has developed a lot in two areas: my ball handling and mid-range game, not just being a layup or 3-point guy. I know at the next level it will be important to have many aspects to my game and I’ve been focusing on getting better in those areas.
Q: How did playing with the Grand Rapids Storm help your game?
A: I think the Grand Rapids Storm helped me gain exposure from colleges and different media outlets. Also, playing against high level competition each tournament raised my game.
Q: What makes you a good candidate for the Michigan Mr. Basketball Award?
A: What makes me a good candidate for Mr. Basketball is that I work each and every day to be leader on the court and in the classroom. I’ve pushed myself to develop a complete game to include: scoring in a variety of ways, playing tough defense, and making the right reads so that I can compete with and against top talent. From long summers spent on the road, to early school mornings in the gym, I have sacrificed a lot to be the best representative of my faith, family, school, and state.
Q: You’ve played for a really good high school coach in Keith Guy. What impact has he had on your basketball career?
A: Coach Guy has impacted my basketball career tremendously, teaching me to play both ends of floor and just helping me become a complete player. I learn something new from him every day! I know that he is preparing me for the next level.
Q: Lastly, what is the main thing you want people to know about you?
A: I want people to know that I’m a three-level scorer that can play both ends of the floor. I’m a true team player that will do whatever
