Always considered to be one of the nation’s premier events, the 2013 NY2LASPORTS Under Armour Summer Jam began on Wednesday. With some of the nation’s top prospects and travel teams competing on opening night, Brekkott Chapman and the Utah Prospects made an early statement and Joseph Burton of the Houston Defenders made a powerful statement in front of a house packed with over 400 college coaches. Here’s a recap from day one of the event, which took place at Homestead High School in Mequon, Wisconsin...
TOP PERFORMERS
Ahmaad Rorie – 2014 – PG – Northwest Panthers
6-0 – Lincoln HS – Tacoma, WA
A quick lead guard in the backcourt, Rorie picked his spots well and knew when to attack, as opposed to when to give the ball up. The California commit scored 20 points in a loss to Team Detroit, showing the ability to find his way into the paint and knock down open shots from beyond the arc.
David Crisp – 2014 – PG – Northwest Panthers
6-0 – Clover Park HS – Lakewood, FL
Crisp went off for 24 points in a loss to Team Detroit and was constantly putting the defense back on their heels. The 6-0 lead guard found ways to attack the defense and get into the paint. With the Panthers trailing for most of the game, Crisp made plays in crunch time to give his team a shot.
Jared Stutzman – 2014 – G/F – Utah Prospects
6-5 – Bonneville HS – Idaho Falls, ID
Stutzman shot the ball very well from 3-point range for the Utah Prospects Wednesday night. The 6-5 wing finished the game with 22 points. Stutzman did a lot of nice things away from the ball, finding open space against the zone defense and creating just enough separation against the man-to-man to get his shot off.
Jarvis Garrett – 2014 – PG – TP Elite
5-11 – Notre Dame Prep (MA) – Milwaukee, WI
Garrett scored 18 points for TP Elite in a come from behind victory over the Q6 All-Stars. The senior floor general took over down the stretch, making some key buckets to aid his team in the win. Garrett was also fantastic defensively in crunch time.
Rayvlon Croon – 2014 – G/F – Team Detroit
6-5 – Thurston HS – Redford, MI
Croon scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds for Team Detroit in their win over the Northwest Panthers. Croon put together a very strong second half, aiding to a large run for his team. The 6-5 wing got out in the open floor and when his teammates found him in transition, he made sure to cash in, often converting some tough attempts at the rim.
Yante Maten – 2014 – F/C – Team Detroit
6-8 – Lahser HS – Bloomfield, MI
Maten may have had the performance of the night in Team Detroit’s win over the Northwest Panthers. The 6-8 big man scored 21 points and collected 19 rebounds. Maten was an absolute workhorse on the glass, using his strength to muscle his way to plenty of offensive rebounds and put backs inside.
START WATCH
Joe Burton - 2014 - G/F - Houston Defenders
6-5 - Atasocita H.S. - Porter, TX
The talented wing exploded for 35 points with a scintillating effort against Team Loaded on opening night. He hit jumpers, finished in transition, and served up a powerful dunk that served as an exclamation mark on a big time opening night effort.
Temarcus Blanton – 2014 – SG – Atlanta Xpress
6-5 – Luella HS – McDonough, GA
Blanton had a big second half and hit the game-tying shot in regulation to send the game into overtime. Although Blanton and Atlanta Xpress would drop the game to the Utah Prospects in the extra session, the 6-5 senior did score 18 points. Blanton had his mid-range game going and also made a couple of nice drives to the bucket.
Brekkott Chapman – 2014 – F – Utah Prospects
6-9 – Roy HS – Roy, UT
Chapman led the Utah Prospects to an overtime win over Atlanta Xpress. The 6-9 forward shot the ball extremely well from mid-range and from beyond the arc. Chapman also had a couple of big transition buckets late in the game and finished with a game-high 27 points.
STOCK BOOSTERS
Chris Ward – 2013 – PF – Yanders Law
6-6 – Kickapoo HS – Springfield, MO
Ward had a good opening round game for Yanders Law in their win over the Peoria Irish. The 6-6 senior scored a game-high 19 points, showing excellent touch and footwork in the paint. Once he caught it on the block, Ward was nearly unstoppable, putting together a very efficient night from the floor.
Derrick Brooks – 2014 – PG – Q6 All-Stars
6-2 – Bartow HS – Lakeland, FL
Brooks was the key playmaker for the Q6 All-Stars Wednesday night. Although he and his team could not hang on against TP Elite, Brooks dished out a game-high seven assists, slicing up the defense in the paint. The 6-2 guard also got after it defensively, coming up with a number of deflections and steals.
Shamik Shepard – 2014 – G/F – The City
6-4 – Southshore HS – Brooklyn, NY
Shepard showed flashed of his potential during Wednesday night’s loss to the Wisconsin Swing. The 6-4 wing did a little bit of everything, both offensively and defensively. Shepard made plays on both ends, usually in transition, showing off his strong build and athleticism.
T.J. Schlundt – 2014 – SG – Wisconsin Swing
6-4 – Oconomowoc HS – Oconomowoc, WI
Schlundt scored all 16 of his points in the first half for the Swing in their win over The City Wednesday night. The 6-4 sharpshooter got into a groove early, hitting a couple shots from downtown. Then once the defense started to over commit, Schlundt cashed in on a few pump fake, one-dribble jumpers just inside the arc. He also collected nine rebounds on the night as well.
