The 17U group at the Wisconsin Spring Showdown group included a talented bunch of players that need to be on college coach’s radars. Here are just some of the players that coaches should be taking a look at.
Tre Burris – 2021 – G – ABC Young Lions
A long and athletic guard that performed well on both sides of the ball. He’s at his best attacking as he is able to get into the paint very often to finish or distribute the ball with good vision and decision making. Burris can really defend the ball at a high level out on the perimeter with all his tools. A quality unsigned senior who can play.
Steven Clay – 2022 – G/F – Phenom University
Clay put on a clutch shooting display in the championship game, hitting four threes in the victory and that was the cherry on top to an excellent overall weekend. He has a very smooth stroke and just was not missing when spotting up on the arc this weekend. While he did most of his damage from deep, the bouncy wing can also score it slashing to the basket and he has a solid mid-range game with creativity and consistency. Clay has plenty of tools that translate to the next level but his improved defensive approach and impact was another piece that showed up consistently this past weekend.
Chase Cummings – 2022 – G – WI RAP
The 6’3” junior is a tough attacking point guard that was always getting into the paint. He showed some good moves off the dribble to beat defenders often and finishes well in traffic in the paint. Plus, he plays with good energy and can stuff the box sheet with his rebounding and distributing ability.
Jake Fisher – 2022 – G – WI RAP
Fisher is a tough two-way guard. He’s a quality on-ball defender that is tough to beat. He scored the ball very efficiently going to the basket getting it done in the paint plus the mid-range. He has good moves with the ball but can also just overpower defenders to get inside. He finished the ball well around the basket plus also has a nice mid-range pull up game.
Ashton Janowski – 2022 – G – JH1
A quality floor general with an excellent stroke, Janowski was lights out at times both in a catch and shoot capacity and off the dribble. He’s a big part of the JH1 Elite attack and that was evident throughout the weekend as he delivered a number of big shots and showed quality leadership and floor impact ability.
Amari Jedkins – 2022 – F – Phenom University
A relentless energy talent who cleans the glass, attacks the rim, and is exceptional defensively, Jedkins was all over the court throughout the weekend. His 6-7 plus length frame combined with his instincts and athleticism make for an exceptional defender and his ability to finish in transition, score on put backs, and stretch the floor with the occasional three point basket was impressive. Finally healthy after some nagging injuries in April, Jedkins had a great weekend.
Armani Jones – 2022 – G – WI RAP
A quick and shifty point guard that can do a lot with the ball in his hands. He has tight handle and is very difficult to stick with. Jones shoots the ball well off the dribble from the mid-range as well as three, can get into the paint, but also distribute it out. Jones can really turn it up a level and take over a game at times.
Logan Kowalski – 2021 – F/C – Chapman Basketball Academy
Kowalski is a mobile 6’8” big man with a strong frame that has plenty of upside. He impressed with his rebounding ability as he can get up and grabs all boards. The senior plays with good energy running the floor and on defense. He finished strong inside for some and-one plays and can also put the ball on the floor.
Derek Lindert – 2022 – G – Randolph Boys
A skilled and physical guard that knows how to score the ball efficiently. Lindert has good moves off the dribble and is a nice crafty finisher around the paint, but also shot the ball from the perimeter spotting up at a high percentage.
Andrew Rohde - 2022 - SG - Phenom University
A lights out marksman who continued to build off an excellent back end of April, Rohde was at it again from the opening game knocking down contested and unconsted perimeter jumpers, finishing at the rim, and playing exceptional defense throughout the weekend. He has size, length, and plays both ends of the floor in dominant fashion and that was on display throughout the weekend once again.
Donavan Short – 2022 – F/C – Phenom University
Short has a very high ceiling with his 6’10” height and solid frame, good agility for his size, and skills. He can score it effectively down inside but can also stretch the floor from three and put it on the floor. Short can defend opposing big men down low but moves well enough to matchup with forwards on the perimeter.
Carter Thomas – 2022 – G/F – WI Crusaders
Thomas is a versatile and energetic 6’5” wing that showed a nice ability to both attacking the basket as well as knock down shots. The junior has a nice stroke to shoot it well spotting up from the perimeter. He contributes in many ways on the floor and defend multiple positions effectively.
Cayden Walton – 2022 – F/C – WI Blizzard
The active 6’6” big man performed well on both ends and has a good strong build. He showed a good ability to defend the paint blocking and altering shots but can also switch out onto guards. Walton scored the ball well down on the block but can also step out and drill the three spotting up.
