Session 2 of the 2023 GNBA in Milwaukee featured a deep and talented field of prospects. In this article we will take a look at a handful of prospects that stood out at the 14U level. Stay tuned for additional coverage on the way.
2027 6’6 F Donovan Davis - Grind Elite 14U
Donovan Davis was the best long term prospect I watched at GNBA session 2. At 6’6, Davis stood out with his skillset and athleticism. He can grab and go on the defensive glass and lead the break himself, where he showed high IQ and passing ability, able to see over the top of the defense and deliver passes on time and on target. Davis is not the most explosive athlete, but is smooth and coordinated at his size, uses long strides to cover ground efficiently, is comfortable operating on the perimeter, and showed good lateral quickness defensively at his size. We will be keeping a close eye on his development and Davis will be in the conversation for top 2027 prospect in Wisconsin.
2027 6’1 PG Timmy West - Team Herro 14U
Timmy West had a huge weekend for Team Herro helping them to the Final 4. A quick and shifty lead guard, there weren’t many defenders who stood a chance to keep him in front, and he lived in the paint all tournament. West can finish with either hand on his drives, has a nice midrange pull up game, and is a willing passer - making good reads when drawing help and finding teammates for easy drop off buckets and open jump shots. West is one of the most competitive players I have seen at the 8th grade level, and his motor was non-stop defensively and on the glass. His best game of the weekend came Saturday as he took over vs Illinois Flight, scoring 29 points and leading his team back from a 17 point deficit to get the win.
2027 6’2 CG Omari Jointer - Griffin Elite 14U
Omari Jointer was just one of a handful of prospects who impressed for Griffin Elite as they took home the 14U platinum championship at GNBA Session 2 in Milwaukee. Jointer is an explosive combo guard with a quick first step to get into the paint where he can finish with either hand in traffic, and made some nice drop off passes to teammates. Defensively he showed good instincts, using his length and quickness in passing lanes to get steals and create transition opportunities. Jointer capped his weekend with a 24 point outburst in the championship game to lead his squad to the victory.
2027 5’10 PG Mike Rogers - Chapman Basketball Academy 14U
Mike Rogers is a pure point guard who plays with great pace and has a lot of positive intangibles for an 8th grader. He is a natural leader, controls the game in the halfcourt, gets his team into their sets and knows where and when to get his teammates the ball. Rogers can play in PNR, create off the dribble and make reads, and is a crafty finisher at the basket. His best game of the weekend came in a Final 4 matchup with Wisconsin Swing, finishing with 19 points as well as a handful of assists and steals in a big win.
2027 6’4 G/F Max Jones - 24Up 14U
It’s not often you see 6’4 prospects with the skill level of Max Jones as 8th graders, and the young wing’s talent was on display all weekend for 24Up. Jones has great size on the perimeter, good handle and an advanced scoring package. He can break defenders down 1 on 1, attack closeouts off the bounce where he uses long strides to cover ground and has great touch around the basket using floaters to avoid shot blockers. Jones was at his best on Sunday morning, single handedly willing 24Up to an OT victory over Bounce Elite with clutch buckets down the stretch, and was consistently putting up 20+ point games throughout the event.
2027 6’2 G Wes DuCharme - Wisconsin Swing 14U
Wes DuCharme impressed at GNBA Session 2 with Wisconsin Swing. DuCharme is a strong and skilled wing who can score in a variety of ways - finishing at the rim, making jumpers off the dribble, and in catch and shoot. He started the event hot with a 26 point performance on Friday night and continued his strong play through Sunday, helping to lead his team to a Final 4 appearance. DuCharme’s combination of scoring ability and size at his age make him an intriguing prospect to know.
2027 6’3 G/F Ed Bullock - Team Haliburton 14U
Edward Bullock had a big time weekend for Team Haliburton and was one of the top scorers in the entire event. Bullock scored 28 points on Friday night and followed up with a 35 point outburst on Saturday. At 6’3, Bullock is a long and wiry wing guard who can create for himself off the dribble, getting downhill to the rim and creating separation to get jumpers off on the perimeter. Bullock has established himself as one of the top wings in Wisconsin’s 2027 class at this stage, and we are excited to watch his continued development into high school.
