While it is extremely early in his high school career, Dooney Johnson is already emerging as one of the top freshmen in not only Wisconsin but the entire Midwest as well. Even before reaching the high school level, the 6’4” guard has made plenty of noise for himself.
Even while playing up a level this past spring and summer with X-Men United, Johnson was one of the top players at the 15U level of the NY2LA Association. With this, he has already gotten on the radars of plenty of college programs. Bryant, Grambling, McNeese State, Nebraska, and Western Illinois have all already offered him. Cincinnati, DePaul, Milwaukee, Oklahoma State, and Wisconsin are also showing some interest.
While he is just three games into his high school season at Milwaukee Juneau, Johnson is already excelling on the floor. He is currently averaging a staggering 25.7 points per game to go along with 8 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 2 steals and 1.7 blocks to have his team sitting at a 2-1 record. “It’s just been a little difficult adjusting to the physicality of the game,” he said about making the move up to the high school level. Outside of the physicality, he said everything else is the same for him.
While he is only a freshman, Johnson has great physical tools in the backcourt standing at 6’4” in addition to good length. Much more than just that, he also had an advanced skill set and is a playmaker on both ends of the floor. While he can hit shots from the outside, he excels playing on the attack. Johnson already moves very well with the ball and finishes at a high rate all around the paint and mid-range. There are few freshmen around with all the tools that he has.
